good monday morning. we begin in los angeles, where investigators are piecing together the puzzle. why a gunman would hunt down tsa agents with deadly intent. >> this morning, that suspect himself is in critical condition, unable to answer questions, as we're learning new details about his movements just before the attack. abc news learned that it was paul ciancia's roommate who dropped him off at the airport on friday thinking he had to catch a flight. instead, he's thought to have walked up to the tsa checkpoint, pulling an assault rifle from his bag, killing tsa agent gerardo hernandez and injuring more. passengers and others ran for cover. >> on the floor, now, on the floor! >> reporter: and teacher brian ludmer was one of those shot. his boss said he had a long road ahead of him. >> his spirits are up. he's still traumatized by all of it, like all of us trying to get our arms around this. >> reporter: meanwhile, a clearer picture of the suspect

is emerging. a family friend saying he took it hard when his mother died in 2009 after years of battling multiple sclerosis. classmates at his delaware high school where he played the french horn in the band said he didn't reach out to anyone. >> there were few people who kept to themselves, he was one of them. >> reporter: later, he went to florida, graduating from the motorcycle mechanics institute in 2011. then moving to los angeles looking for work. he shared an apartment with several roommates. one saw nothing so fear. >> he was a very nice guy. a bit loaner or introverted. but nothing where i would ever, ever expect him to do anything like this. >> reporter: this morning, the busy l.a.x. airport is back in business. friday's shooting left a trail of sorrow and many more question to be answered. and as asht airport tensions remain high, another airport, the one in birmingham, alabama, is up and running this morning

after a bomb threat shut down operations there. passengers and personnel evacuated. flights suspended for two hours last night. they found no evidence of explosives. now to the other major story this morning. new insight into the troubled health care rollout. >> even as the president was urging americans to use the phone not the website, internal memos show that applications over the phone had the same problems as those submitted online. >> abc's tahman bradley is joining us now from washington with more. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, diana. good morning, john. the health care website was down all weekend for maintenance. it will come back up, go back down a little bit each day. as they work the bugs out, the president is hitting the road with the message obama care is working. this week, the administration will keep pushing for people to enroll despite problems with the healthcare.gov website. later today, the president tries to rally grass roots supporters to the cause of trying to sign up uninsured consumers.

there could be more trouble for people seeking to enroll online. the administration says healthcare.gov will be down every night from 1:00 to 5:00 a.m. for maintenance. >> i can promise you that the first enrollment numbers released later this month are not going to be what we want them to be. >> reporter: as the administration scrambles to fix the site, republicans have upped their attack on the health carroll out. >> i would say to the president, why doesn't he call a time out on this. >> reporter: they point to millions of americans who may lose their insurance under the law's changes. >> i think the key thing that the president is trying to get away from, and that is he told people they could keep their insurance and that was not the truth. >> reporter: supporters counter that america is being forced to change their insurance had policies that were low quality. and that now, at a reasonable price, those americans can buy a plan that has more basic coverage, such as hospital visit, maternity, mental health, and prescription drugs.

state john kerry is in the region mending fences. he's in saudi arabia today. official there are unhappy that the u.s. has failed to follow up on threats to punish syria with military strikes. they're also unhappy that the president has taken steps to ease tensions with iran. that is saudi arabia's arch enemy. taxi dash cam was rolling when a reckless driver lost control on a busy israeli highway. just before the road splits in two. take a look. the driver suddenly swerves to his right. he slams into the side of a van. the impact is so strong, he ricochets back over the median into speeding traffic. there, he finally is slowed down when he plows into a railing. amazingly, no one was hurt. terrifying moments on the field last night during the colts-texans game. at halftime, the head coach of the texas team collapsed. coach gary kubiak was leaving the field. he fell to his knees. he was immediately surrounded by medical personnel and taken off the field on a stretcher. he was conscious and alert. there were worrisome moments for the players and coaches. >> there was a lot of unknown. everything was unknown as to what was going on.

>> the 19-year-old was stuck in a two-foot space for nearly two days. emergency crews had to break through a wall to get him out. he went missing saturday and concerned classmates went door to door until they found him. >> his phone was off. he hadn't checked in for days. >> they would not have found him for who knows how long. he probably would be dead right now. >> he may have fallen from a fifth floor window. he was conscious and talking when rescued. a cirque du soleil performer remains hospitalized after a fall on friday night. sources tell abc news junior espinosa is in stable condition after slipping off the wheel of death. the latest accident comes after another performer fell to her death. and the faa is investigating the collision of two planes over the skies of northern wisconsin. both planes were carrying sky divers.

mike robinson says they were a few seconds away from a normal sky dive when the planes collided. all nine sky divers were able to jump free. >> anytime two planes collide in the air, i mean, it's -- it's potential disaster for everybody involved. so we were all very, very lucky. >> amazingly, all nine quick-thinking sky divers were able to parachute to safety. one plane was destroyed by the pilot was able to escape. the other plane landed safely. what looks like a ball of lightning came barrelly down a powerline right through the neighborhood. as the oncoming surge approaches, drew griffiths had the camera ready to role. the image has gone viral with more han 1 million rits. pro bowl guard richie

forecast? >> certainly it was chilly. good morning, everyone. in the east bay, we can see construction. that will last until 5:00. eastbound side of 80 from powell to willow, clear conditions in the westbound direction. here is the drive time traffic 580 from tracy to dublin. 24 minutes gets you there. 680 southbound to mission boulevard south into fremont is 16 minutes and 85 northbound from 101 do cupertino is five minutes. this is the bay bridge toll plaza with traffic funneling in nicely away from the maze into san francisco. there are no crashes to report with no stalls or construction. kristen and eric? >> a man in a motorized wheelchair is dead after being hit by a car in san francisco. it happened at a crosswalk. the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating.

the victim was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead. the accident is "under investigation." >> the latest on deadly shooting at lax. the suspected gunman is in the hospital under armed guard as investigators continue to put together the moments leading to the shooting. here is abc7 news reporter. authorities say surveillance video shows paul ciancia walking to the psa check point and pulling out and firing multiple shots at point-blank range at a t.s.a. officer. they say he moved up the escalator and looked back at the officer who moved and shot again to kill him. >> he made a decision to kill multiple t.s.a. employees. >> lights are lit in honor of hernandez. two other officers are released from the hospital. 54
